Mihalis Sapountzis was born in Kavala in 1976 and raised in Edessa where he took his first lessons in music. Since 1995 he has been living in Thessaloniki. He took courses in higher music theory and graduated from the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki (Fuge, K Siempis’s class) and took a diploma in composition (with Distinction and First Price) in the class of L. Hatzileontiadis (St. Con. Of Th.) He has attended composition seminars as an active member with Th. Antoniou, D. Blake, S. Sciarrino and H. Tulve.
He has won prizes in several composition competitions such as the Young Greek Composers Workshop organised as part of the ‘Days of Modern Music’ in Patra in May 2003, the ‘Modern Music Workshop’ organised in March 2004 in Athens and the pan-hellenic composition competition organised by the Municipality of Thermi as part of ‘Synthermia’ festival in September 2005. He has been honoured with a commendation in the artistic competition opened on the occasion of 20 years since the founding of the School of Fine Arts of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for his work ‘Crash” in collaboration with the artist D. Mihalaros.
He has a Diploma in double bass, class of G.Gralista (St. Con. Of Th.) and he has been a permanent member of theThessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra since 2004. He is member of 'Locos de Atar' (tango quintet). He is a graduate of the Music Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts of AUTH.
